Equine Studies

"The Horse Course"

Offered: Semester 2 (February-June) at

Napanee District Secondary School

If you are pursuing a career or hobby in the equine field this NEW program was designed just for you! Equine Studies will allow you to develop the knowledge, skills and connections needed to enter into and succeed in the horse industry.

Designed for motivated and responsible students who are able to work independently both in school and on the job, Equine Studies will prepare you for related postsecondary programs at the university and college level, entry directly into the workplace, or simply to enjoy horses as a hobby.

Students will explore Equine Science (anatomy and physiology, genetics and nutrition) and learn proper care techniques (stable management, first aid, health care and disease prevention). A major research project will allow students to learn more about a related topic of their choice. These projects may be chosen to be published online as educational material in partnership with Equine Guelph on the Equimania youth education site.

Field trips and a Co-operative education placement will allow students to gain hands on practical experience and valuable employment skills. There are many unique opportunities for students to travel outside our area.  In 2008 students were placed at Ashland Farm (Ashton, ON), KingRidge Stables (King City, ON), Oakhurst Farm (Ashton, ON) and Franklands Farm (Brockville).

Students who wish to pursue a career or hobby in the horse industry are welcome to apply - you do not have to own or ride a horse to take this program. You WILL have to complete a Student Profile form in addition to the regular application form. You can download the form below and include it with your application form.
